Whether you’re looking for a culture trip, a trip filled with beaches and exquisite food or adventure, Cartagena has you covered. Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast which is by iconic locations like the walled Old Town. Cartagena is known for its squares, cobblestone streets and colourful colonial buildings. With its constant tropical climate, the city is also a popular beach destination with islands like Isla de Barú and Islas del Rosario, that have white-sand beaches, palm trees, coral reefs.
DAY 1: EXPLORE THE OLD CITY OF CARTAGENA
To kick things off, you’ll be exploring the old city of Cartagena which includes visiting neighbourhoods of Centro, San Diego, and Getsemani. Taking in the beauty cobbled stoned city, you’ll soon understand why Old City is a place that should not be overlooked. You can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage site within the walled city (La Ciudad Amurallada).
DAY 2: TIME FOR YOU TO GET MUDDY
A call for all the thrill seekers! Today, we’ll be heading to Volcan de Lodo El Totumo. Volcan de Lodo El Totumo is an active mud volcano, where you’ll be able to get down and dirty in its mud spa. Being one of the smallest Volcano’s on the island, Volcan de Lodo El Totumo is known to provide healing and relaxation for individuals who choose to dive in. Be warned, this is not for the faint hearted or people who don’t want to get wet or dirty!
DAY 3: SKY ABOVE, SAND BELOW, PEACH WITHIN
A day to spend some time in the sun at the well-known sandy beach of Playa Blanca. Here you will be able to explore the beach and relax as you mix with the locals that will hopefully become like family.
DAY 4: DISCOVER THE UNKNOWN
Today you’ll be able to explore three iconic historical hot spots. The first being the Palace of the Inquisition where you’ll learn about Cartagena’s religious history and some of the politics of the city. After you’ll go to Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas and visit one of Columbia’s oldest castles that holds the greatest fortress ever built by the Spaniards in any of their colonies. After having lunch and time to explore the grounds, we’ll all meet up to explore our final destination ‘Santuario de San Pedro Claver’. Santuario de San Pedro Claver is Cartagena’s iconic church as it has the remains of St. Peter Claver. St Peter Claver was a patron who fought to make the living conditions of slaves better, whilst working to abolish and baptize slaves. The church also holds rich history dating from colonial periods.
DAY 5: ENJOY YOUR OWN COMPANY
Today you’ll be able to explore some of the iconic hot spots independently! Yourism recommend soaking in all the hidden culture of Cartagena and visiting popular spots like ‘Cafe del Mar, Street Art in Getsemani or one of the many sandy beaches that Cartagena has to offer’.
DAY 6: YOURISM EATS EXPERIENCE
Yourism Eats Takeover! Today, you’ll be heading over to the Bazurto Market to feast on all thing’s Colombian cuisine. Tasting treats like Buñuelos, Empanadas, Patacones, Pandebono and Sancocho. After you’ve explored the Bazurto Market, you’ll meet Yourism’s favourite Abuela and learn how to cook some of things you’ve previously eaten. Yourism Abuela’s is a scheme that ensures that tourism continues to help and shed light onto native Colombians.
DAY 7: SMELL THE SEA AND FEEL THE SKY
Are you reading to see some of the world’s best beaches and islands? We’ve got you covered as we’ll be taking a day trip to visit three different islands by boat. Starting off with Isla Grande, Isla de Barú, and finally Islas del Rosario. Each Island is has sandy white beaches where you’ll be able to do water sports like kayaking and snorkelling.
DAY 8: DANCE TIL YOU CAN’T FEEL YOUR LEGS
Dance and music is a pretty big thing within the Latin culture, it is often seen as a way of expressing yourself. So, of course we couldn’t let you come to Columbia without learning how to salsa! Today you’ll be learning how to salsa at Crazy Salsa, Salsa School! You’ll be able to dance like a pro, dancing through the streets of Cartagena.
DAY 9: AIN’T NO PARTY LIKE A CHIVA PARTY
Putting your new moves to the test we’ll be taking the popular Chiva Party bus that will stop and drop up other tourists and locals who want to embark on a night that is full of adventure. The bus stops at popular night club hotspots, whether you want to get off or not, is up to you as the bus is a party on its own. You’ll be able to dance to all the classic and popular Latin American beats that have the locals going loco.
DAY 10: EXPLORE THE BIRTH PLACE OF COLOMBIAN MUSIC
Today you’ll be able to visit the town of San Basilio de Palenque. This town is one of the first towns in America that had freed slaves living in one free communal place. San Basilio de Palenque is the birthplace of popular Colombian musicians and genres of music like champeta and palenque. With its popular music , this town still has the essence of freedom as people remember the past of their ancestors.
